The University of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, United Kingdom, has several student residence halls. A few outdated residence halls were recently demolished, and Tapton Hall of Residence was scheduled to be demolished in 2009, however according to the University's website, Tapton is open for accommodation during the 2009/10 academic year.[1] Sorby Hall was imploded with high explosives on August 27, 2006. The university plans to concentrate its undergraduate students into the multiple buildings of the Endcliffe Student Village.[2]

It is the smallest of the catered halls, housing approximately 400 students (mostly first year undergraduates but also with a few higher years). It is less than a mile from the central campus of the university, close to Broomhill and Crookes, and it takes approximately 10/15 minutes to walk to the Students' Union. Tapton has its own bar, lounge and dining room, as well as a small computer room and 3 conference rooms which operate as television rooms when not in use. Tapton also houses a small library, offering a modest collection of books and a work space for residents.
The fact that the residence lies on a steep hill resulted in an unusual numbering system for the floors. The entrance leads to floor number 2, with the floors below numbered 1 and 0 (which are only present across half the building where the slope falls away). Above are floors 3,4 and 5.
Tapton Hall of Residence was closed by the University of Sheffield in June 2010.
Hallam Gate Court, adjacent to Tapton, will continue to be used for accommodation and will not be demolished.
Ranmoor House was, until February 2008, the largest hall of residence at the university, housing around 800 students, and also the most westerly, being furthest away from the Students' Union, the Octagon Centre and most of the university buildings..
All the residents of Ranmoor in the 2007-08 academic year were relocated to other accommodation, including the Endcliffe Student Village, during January and February 2008. Ranmoor was demolished in Easter 2008, and the site redeveloped extensively with new accommodation blocks similar to those at Endcliffe. This follows the demolition of Earnshaw and Sorby to make way for the new accommodation at Endcliffe.
The Endcliffe Student Village is a large development of student accommodation for the University of Sheffield[3], located in Endcliffe in west Sheffield between Fulwood Road, Endcliffe Vale Road and Westbourne Road. The development includes both established blocks (Stephenson Hall, Crescent Flats, Crewe Flats, Halifax Hall) and new build blocks, typically 4–5 storeys high. Construction of these blocks began in 2006, after the demolition of Sorby Hall and Earnshaw Hall.
The development forms part of the university's Student Residences Strategy[4]. The first stage of this was the redevelopment of Crewe Flats and Stephenson Hall, and the construction of seven new blocks. Later plans include the demolition and/or redevelopment of Tapton Hall of Residence.
At the centre of the village is The Edge – a two-storey building intended as a hub for the site, containing the dining hall for catered students, as well as a bar, IT centre, and conference facilities.
Of the new apartment blocks, the two largest are known as Howden and Derwent, and the smallest Stanage. All of the apartment blocks are named after climbing crags in the Peak District. The newly built apartment blocks consist of ensuite and deluxe ensuite rooms, with the latter including the addition of a double bed and larger floorspace. These rooms are all offered as self catered accommodation, with flats made up of between 5 and 12 rooms, sharing a kitchen-living area.
The Ranmoor Student Village is a new development that was completed in early September 2009. It consists of 6 separate blocks of 6 floors each, each containing a number of self-contained student flats with varying numbers of rooms each, the smallest being 5 and the largest being 12. There are several sizes of rooms available in the Village, including the standard en-suite room, the "deluxe" room (which has a 3/4 double bed, larger bathroom and a small kitchen) and studio rooms (which are similar to deluxe rooms but larger). The majority of flats just contain standard rooms, but some flats contain both standard and deluxe rooms. Each block has one or more locked bicycle storage rooms that may be used by residents of the block. The Ranmoor Student Village is located on the North side of Fulwood Road, not far from Tapton Hall residence and approximately a 5 minute walk away from the other student village, the Endcliffe Student Village. It is close to the Broomhill area, where the nearest shops are located. The Broomhill shops are approximately a 10 minute walk from Ranmoor.
Although the building of the Ranmoor Student Village was completed for September 2009, only four (Windgather, Wimberry, Ramshaw and Kinder) of the six blocks were occupied this academic year. The other two blocks (Laddow and Ravenstones) were not available for residency during the 2009 academic year.
Ranmoor has an on-site central focus point named The Ridge, which takes on a similar role to The Edge in the Endcliffe village, having a bar, laundrette, services desk, meeting rooms and other services in the building.
In April 2010, following sustained complaints from local residents about the behaviour of students, the route from the Halls to Broomhill village was declared an Anti-social Behaviour Priority area by the Police.
There are several halls of residence nearer the city centre, which are referred to collectively as the "City and Central Campus". They include:
Both Opal One and Opal Two are owned by Opal Property Group Limited [5] a company which owns several halls of residence in the UK.
